Hurricane Ivan Before & After Photos From our Coastal & Marine Geology Program Check out the new pass between Little Lagoon and the Gulf of Mexico. This new pass is on federal wildlife property immediately adjacent to the gated community of Laguna Key at the end of West beach Blvd. in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Some think this breach was formed when water rushed back out of the inland areas towards the gulf. It is much wider than the existing 'managed' pass closer to Hwy 59 on West Beach Blvd. It is really beautiful, close-up photos are on our HOME page.
Right to left are a hotel, the Winfield Resort, and Sugar Beach Condos.
The hotel has roof damage but nothing is as bad as the collapsed Winfield Resort--this photo clearly shows why it is not a good idea to remain behind when an hurricane is headed our way. The lower floors are now buried under the upper floors. You can see that everyone's pools are gone. Crystal Beach Condo Collapse & Missing Beach Houses---
This stretch of Orange Beach with so many destroyed homes is across the street from the Waffle House and the former location of the round building that once housed The Buccaneer Restaurant and later The Pass Restaurant. It had been torn down before Ivan hit. The last comparison photo is of Pensacola Beach

Many people do not know that Alabama even has beaches, but Alabama has the most beautiful white sugar sand beaches around. The weather is glorious, the area is full of golf courses, and the Alabama Gulf Coast has been a steady award winner in family beach vacation categories. Gulf Shores is the original and most well known part of the beach, Orange Beach has been more recently developed and Perdido Key is right next to Orange Beach. We do not have nearly the traffic problems that the Destin area seems to have now-a-days. The prices are very reasonable down in Dixie, the weather is exceptional, and the people are the friendliest ever !
